In January 2011, Dean was implicated in a case regarding whistle blower Bob Burton, who allegedly uncovered evidence of criminal activity including dumping of toxic waste by Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) employees into water reclamation areas. Sen. Dean chairs the Committee on Environmental Preservation and Conservation, which oversees the FDEP.
Burton claimed to have evidence of illegal activities, including a recorded telephone conversation with Dean's former Chief of Staff, Ryan Tyson. Upon attempting to reveal this alleged evidence, Burton's home was raided by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and computers, files, and electronic devices were seized. Burton was later arrested and charged with felony wiretapping.[3][4][5]
